Solutions for Fine Hair

I’ve had fine hair for most of my adult life, and I was always looking for solutions to improve the thickness and appearance of my hair naturally. Over the years, I’ve come across a number of products and solutions that I’ve found to be quite effective in accomplishing both things, so in the post I’d like to share some of them with you!

The products that I’m linking below work very well for me, and if you have fine hair nowadays, your options are better than ever and you can really achieve great results with a little bit of research! Without further ado, here’s my full list, which I’ve categorized by product type. Let know if you try any of these and I’d love to get your feedback!

Supplements

Good supplements contribute in a large way to successful hair growth. After you’ve experienced stress, damaging color treatments, or other procedures, you can lose a significant amount of hair, and I discovered that supplements can go a long way to improving the speed of hair growth and the its thickness. Here are five of my favorite supplements, in no particular order.

1. Hum Nutrition Hair Sweet Hair Gummies

2. PHYTOPHANÈRE DUO

3. Hair La Vie

4. Viviscal Professional Supplements

5. Nutrafol for Women

Shampoo

It’s very important to choose shampoo that applies to your specific hair type, and this is particularly true in the case of fine hair. Fine hair can attract oil faster and look quite flat if not maintained properly. As a result, I’d strongly suggest that you decrease the usage of hot tools such as hair dryers (if not necessary), curlers, and straighteners, because they’ll dry your hair out and can also cause hair loss if used excessively or improperly.

There is also a theory that over-shampooing your hair can contribute to hair loss, so try experimenting by just using water for longer periods of time to see if your hair quality improves. I’ve tried it for periods of one week, and it works quite well for me, although I know some people prefer to shampoo every day (and excessive oil can cause its own problems), but each solution should be individual and you should experiment to see what works best for you.

If you have time, I’d also recommend massaging the scalp once a day for a few minutes – it improves blood circulation, awakens hair follicles, and you can simply use a hairbrush or your hands.

1. Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt

2. Oribe Gold Lust Repair & Restore Shampoo

3. Viviscal Professional Thin to Thick Shampoo

4. Phytonovathrix Fortifying Energizing Shampoo

5. Pump Thickening Shampoo

Hair Styling

Using proper styling products such as a volumizing spray can significantly lift up the roots and visually thicken your hair. I also love using dry shampoo, even on my clean hair, because it adds texture and makes my hair look fuller overall. Here are some of my favorite styling products, in no particular order. I’ve been using some of them for years, and they never disappoint.

1. Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray

2. Oribe maximista thickening spray

3. Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray

4. Colorproof Fresh Start soft Dry Shampoo

5. R+CO Outer Space

6. Moroccanoil Treatment

7. PHYTOVOLUME ACTIF VOLUMIZING SPRAY

8. PHYTODÉFRISANT BOTANICAL SMOOTHING BALM

PRP Injections

Last fall, I was lucky enough to collaborate with Aristocrat Plastic Surgery to undergo PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy, which is a procedure that takes platelets from your blood cells and infuses them into your scalp in order to stimulate the regeneration of hair follicles.

This procedure has the reputation of being rather painful due to the extensive nerve endings in the scalp, but my experience with it wasn’t as bad as all the articles said – I received an oral and topical anesthetic, and they subsequently injected the platelets into my hairline. This procedure costs close to $900 in Manhattan, so it’s not the most affordable, and you need to undergo 3 treatments (1 per month), and you’ll see the full results within 4 months. If you have the money to spend, this procedure is a good option for those who have fine hair, but I would start with the products above first and work your way up to it!

If you’d like, you can watch videos from the procedure in my Instagram highlights “Hair.”
